Summary

Northwest of Earth gathers thirteen thrilling short stories by C. L. Moore, featuring her iconic space-smuggler Northwest Smith and two tales of Jirel of Joiry. First published in Weird Tales during the 1930s, these tales follow Smith—an outlaw pilot armed with his ray-gun and a stubborn sense of self-preservation—as he ventures into haunted temples, encounters seductive alien beings, and faces off against ancient, unknowable powers. The collection balances fast-paced interplanetary escapades with vivid, atmospheric descriptions that often lean into cosmic dread. While some stories follow a formula—Smith meets alluring woman, danger unfolds, Smith narrowly escapes—they remain engrossing, rooted in Moore’s lush, sensory-rich prose.

About Author

Catherine Lucille Moore (1911–1987), writing as C. L. Moore, was one of the earliest—and most influential—women in science fiction and fantasy. Launching her career in the early 1930s, she brought sensuality, emotional nuance, and rich atmosphere to pulp magazines like Weird Tales. She created Northwest Smith, the scruffy space outlaw, and Jirel of Joiry, one of the genre’s first female warrior heroes. Moore later married fellow writer Henry Kuttner, collaborating under various pseudonyms before retiring in the 1960s. Honored with the Gandalf Grand Master and World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, she helped pave the way for generations of speculative writers.
